Art as Weapon / § 218, selected documents from the 1920s & 1930s, 2018

Kunst ist Waffe / § 218

As part of a series of works about the tradition of worker writers, Ina Wudtke collected a selection of the most important texts from the 20s and 30s about the § 218 (a § that makes abrotion illegal). In 1928 Friedrich Wolf wrote the programmatic text “Art as Weapon”, which defined the self-understanding of the worker writers it promoted to campaign with one’s art and take side with Marxism. The three most important topics of the worker writers were working conditions, the housing question and § 218. The documents which Ina Wudtke collected and presents mostly in vitrines are documents which reflect the debates on the § 218 in different kind of publications (theater texts, pocket books, magazine articles) by worker writers.
