WER WAR ALBERT NORDEN?

From 1984 to 1992 Kaulsdorf-Nord subway station in Berlin was named „Albert-Norden-Straße“. Likewise, the Cecilienstraße was named after Albert Norden during this period. The installation WER WAR ALBERT NODERN? (WHO WAS ALBERT NORDEN?) questions the symbolic occupation of public space by the naming and renaming of stations, streets and places. 22 years after the station and the steet have bee renamed, Ina Wudtke asks whether it was right to delete Albert Norden’s name from collective memory and to rename the Albert-Norden-Straße after Cecilie zu Mecklenburg. She was the last German crown princess who openly supported the NSDAP, engaged herself for the reinstallment of previous borders and promoted a restitution of the former colonies as well as antisemitic ideas. Since May 1, 2015, the installation WER WAR ALBERT NORDEN? is on view in the Berlin subway station Kaulsdorf-Nord. Furthermore Ina Wudtke organized a six week exhibition with 19 artists, a frame programme with film screenings and lectures directly at Cecilienplatz.
